“Madame Web”, Sony’s latest collaborative film with Marvel, has set quite a bar for the critics and what to expect from future projects. Madame Web tells the story of Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), a paramedic in New York City who starts to have visions that at first she cannot identify until it is revealed she is clairvoyant. With her new powers, Cassandra must confront her past and protect three young women from the antagonist who wants them dead.
Through the overview, Madame Web seems to be a decent movie about superheroes that sets place in the universe of our famous and friendly neighborhood spider hero we all love and know, Spider-man. Yet, it is because of this inclusion that fans tend to expect something way more different than rather what the movie is bringing to the table. With its release on Feb 14 in theaters Madame Web left a big impression on the public, but not the one we’d expected.
Since it’s valentine day debut, the movie made $26.2 million in the US and a worldwide total of $51.9 million. Although, on its 3-day opening weekend it earned $17.6 million, setting the record for Sony’s lowest box office opening in the history of SSU, coming in low to Morbius (2022) which grossed around $39 million another well-known criticized movie of Sony.
People’s reactions are scoring all over the internet, many critics have published their critics and news articles but the most heard critic currently is from the public. Many big media influencers, such as ‘Supes’, big content creators in the DC and Marvel field, have called out Madame Web for being “one of the worst superhero films if not the worst superhero film I’ve ever seen in my life”. For a film that had a budget of around $80 million, it is not going well. A variety of aspects are being flamed by the fans from the broad and poor dialogue to the whole direction that the movie took. Disregarding the box office opening week, many have even compared the previously mentioned movie disaster ‘Morbius’ to be even better than Madame Web and its faulty plot, with Morbius having a 15% in rotten tomatoes while Madame Web currently holds a 17%.
While there is no doubt that there were indeed many Marvel or simple Spider-man fans who were awaiting and hyping this movie, so far it is as hard as finding water in the desert to find a good critic for this movie, even with the inclusion of a smoking beloved actress like Sydney Sweeney. Fans have become worried about the development of future films and soon-to-come projects presented by Sony along with Marvel that may or may not be a complete mess, or in mocking terms a “Madame Web”.
