Miguel García, 9th Grade
It is not a secret that we take English Language Art classes for our entire school career, but why is this class so important? Why do teachers decide to teach this? What inspires them to do so? With the help of Keysha Reyes, a 9th and 10th grade teacher, we will learn more about this class, how it helps the students, and learn more about this great teacher’s life.
English class plays an important role in our lives since it helps with communication, with some even considering it the key to success. English is considered the main language for studying any subject all over the world; it helps you develop comprehension skills in class, and provides you with more job opportunities. The use of English as an international language is growing more and more with time. English is also used widely in literature and entertainment since English is the unofficially recognized lingua franca.
This week, we had the great opportunity to interview one of the English teachers of the High School department, this being Keysha Reyes. Keysha Reyes is a young enthusiastic teacher whose story with the subject goes deep into her childhood. Keysha Reyes was born on November 12, in the early 2000’s in Sabana de la Mar. She grew up in a really small town called “El Valle,” and since there was not much to do, she dedicated a lot of time to reading which is how she started to love literature.
Teacher Reyes decided to dedicate her life to teaching after she found out her love for literature and it was pretty easy for her to help her classmates back when she was at school. For her, it felt really natural to transmit that love that she had for language, literature, and communicating to others. Teacher Reyes learnt English kind of by accident. She learned the language by seeing and hearing media in English. And by learning another language, she was expanding the things she could explore, and teach others about.
We asked this teacher for some book recommendations for the students at New Horizons, and these are the books she recommended.
If you are someone who is getting into reading: Aura by Carlos Fuentes
If you are someone that prefers short stories: Any book or novel by Julio Cortazár.
She also recommends the original fairy tales, which are a midpoint between childhood and adulthood.
If you like poetry: Emily Dickinson.
