Throughout time, the government of the Dominican Republic has relied on different methods and modules to sustain the country and benefit from it. It is mostly known for its main industries such as exportation, the production of textiles, tourism, and the mining of gold. With this also comes the benefiting factor of receiving imports from different relations and trading with countries such as the United States, India, and Switzerland, among others. Imports bring to the country raw industrialised factors, cars, electronic appliances, and petroleum. Alongside this, the Dominican Republic is one of the leading exporters in the Caribbean for agricultural and manufactured products, and jewellery.

Recently, a trade relationship that the Dominican Republic holds with Jamaica has stood out over the past week and its most recent Export agreement treaty with the D.R. consisting of change within the amount of exports and trades between the 2 countries during the official visit of the Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson.

On the 9th of November, Kamina Johnson the Jamaican Foreign Minister paid an official visit to the Dominican Republic setting foot for the initial steps for the agreement’s attainment. She met with President Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez. In this interview various aspects were discussed between the individuals, one of the highlights was the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness to the country next year, alongside other discussions covering the cooperation agreements involving agriculture, investments, logistics, and trade signed between the Foreign Ministers. The relations between the D.R. and Jamaica have never been better especially thanks to the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, emphasising once again the importance of the Prime Minister’s visit.

Dominican Ambassador of Jamaica Angie Shakira Martinez, who also attended the meeting, previously said Jamaica is a strategic partner of the Dominican Republic, as it is currently the country’s second largest trading partner in the region and its seventh largest trading partner in the world. The agreement signed during Kamina Johnson’s visit is in line with the Dominican government’s strategy to strengthen relations with Caribbean countries and diversify exports to Jamaica, allying the countries with a great alliance bond.
